inReach GPS device rental

Plan your expedition well with an inReach GPS device

Book in advance!

To ensure peace of mind on your expedition, plan ahead!

First and foremost, it's important to understand that having a professional emergency device does not exempt you from paying the bill in case of intervention. The person for whom the SOS is triggered will be responsible for the costs. That’s why it’s crucial to have solid insurance! Affordable options adapted to outdoor activities exist through membership with FQME or Rando Québec, depending on the activity.

Since this is a rental device, we do need to configure it before each rental. To make sure we have enough time, check the device's availability and notify us of your plans at least 3 business days in advance! We highly recommend downloading our brief user manual to better understand the device's features. A laminated version will be provided at the start of your rental period.

You’ll need to share the coordinates of your route’s starting and ending points with us via the rental agreement. When picking up your inReach device, please have these coordinates with you.

What’s included?

The rental includes:

  • An active subscription to the Iridium satellite network, allowing professional rescue requests from anywhere in remote regions
  • 2 units per day from the following:
    • Sent or received text message
    • Basic weather (2-day forecast)

Example -> ff you rent the device for 3 days, you’ll have 6 units to use, e.g., 4 messages and 2 basic weather forecasts.

Additional options:

  • Extra messages/weather units → $0.75/unit
  • Premium weather (7-day forecast) → $1.25/unit
  • Tracking points (to view your route afterward; time intervals between points adjustable) → $0.15/unit

A minimum of $5 will be charged for any extra usage fees.

Create your route!

If you’re heading into a remote area, possibly off the beaten path, it’s still important to plan your route and possible stop or evacuation points. Routes cannot be added directly to the device, so make sure to send them to us at least 3 business days in advance. You can still add waypoints manually on the device for navigation or as evacuation/destination points.

The inReach GPS device we rent accepts 3 file formats: gpx, kml, and kmz. If you don’t know how to create one, see the short guide below.

To create a gpx file from your computer:

  • Go to the MyGPSFiles website
  • At the top left of the map, click “Trace” then “Create”
  • Add your route points in order using the mouse
  • In the left panel, name your route however you wish
  • Save it as a gpx file; it will be automatically downloaded
  • Email your file(s) to rikibloc@gmail.com

And that’s it, just pack your bag and off you go!
